CCCL PANORAMA:
Mekong

The first edition of CCCL Panorama will be a 2-day event, with a film screening, climate change conversations, a filmmaking workshop, and a pitching forum. It is designed for professional and non-professional filmmakers who would like to explore climate change filmmaking. The participants, selected from the open call, will be exposed to issues about the Mekong crisis and climate change in Thailand, as well as to knowledge about film production and film business. Each participant will also have an opportunity to pitch their short film project to a judging panel that consists of CCCL staff, professional filmmakers, and environmental experts. One promising project will receive a film production grant of 20,000 Baht.

PANORAMA PROGRAMS

FILM SCREENING: FOOD EVOLUTION

An American documentary film FOOD EVOLUTION directed by Scott Hamilton Kennedy will be presented. The CCCL team will lead the conversation after the screening.

About the filmmaker

Scott Hamilton Kennedy is an Academy Award-nominated documentary director, as well as a writer, producer, cameraman, and editor. He is the founder of Black Valley Films, a film production company based in Silver Lake, California.

About the panelist

Assistant Professor Dr.Chainarong Sretthachau is a professor at the Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Mahasarakham University. He is also the founder of Thai Ban research and has academic works published in many academic journals. He has more than 30 years of experience in environmental activism in Thailand and the Mekong Basin.

About the panelist

Associate Professor Kanokwan Manorom has more than 20 years of experience in carrying out research in fields such as political economy and natural resource governance, gender and livelihoods analysis, development and impact assessment in the Northeast region of Thailand and the Mekong river basin. Extensive experience in using and teaching sociological methodologies such participatory action research, participatory rural appraisal, farmer/community led research, gender analysis and field-based learning. She has mentored and supervised masters and doctoral students from oversea. Collaborated and managed a number of international research programs in Thailand. She has extensive experience in managing and overseeing projects and fellowship programs of mid-career professionals. She has fostered extensive network of academics, civil society organizations and government officers in Thailand and the Mekong region. Published internationally and refereed and reviewed journal articles.

About the panelist

Ormbun Thipsuna graduated with a bachelor's degree at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University. She has 30 years of experience working in rural development and research studies on social and environmental development. She have been developing the strength of community leaders, liaising with government agencies, the private sector, civil society, and community organizations in the Mekong area, and promoting the youth network in Mekong River basin, organizing youth camps and media campaigns to protect the environment.

About the panelist

Taiki Sakpisit is a filmmaker and visual artist working in Bangkok. His works explore the underlying tensions and conflicts, and the sense of anticipation in contemporary Thailand, through precise and sensorially overwhelming audio-visual assemblage using a wide range of sounds and images. His films produce heightened and uneasy modes of spectatorship that often relate to the tumultuous socio-political climate in Thailand. His feature length film THE EDGE OF DAYBREAK is premiered at the 50th International Film Festival in the Tiger Awards Competition and won FIPRESCI award for its “Mysterious atmosphere and rich imagery in depicting trauma and violence, for its capacity of dealing with 40 years of political turmoil through a powerful and hypnotic cinematic journey, and for its compromise with the past in order to confront the present and the next future.”

About the panelist

David Allen Cluck is a film industry veteran with over twenty eight years of production experience. As a Producer and 1st Assistant Director, David has worked on over 50 feature films, dozens of Television programs, and countless TV commercials. In 2016, David produced The Forest, his second collaboration with writer/director Paul Spurrier. The Thai language drama set in the northeast Thailand enjoyed a very notable festival run and garnered wins for Best Director at the Ferrara Film Festival and the NETPAC Award from the BIFAN Film Festival in Bucheon, South Korea.

Pitching Forum

In the section, each participant (12 teams in total) will present and pitch their film projects that they prepared prior to the event to the CCCL team and the panelists. Each team will have 5-7 minutes to present their project to the panelists. At the end of each pitch, they will have 7 minutes for collective feedback and discussion with the panelists.
