Sea Level Rise and Flooding

This news story includes the following topics:

·      Sea Level Rise

·      Floods

·      Extreme Storms

There is a direct relationship between climate change and flooding.  Extreme storms and heavy rain often result in flooding.  However, flooding can also be caused by what is called sea level rise, which is also a result of climate change.  In areas already effected by sea level rise, the occurrence of an extreme storm magnifies the impact and damage.  Sea level rise is occurring world-wide at this point.

This Channel 13 Norfolk, Virginia television news story documents sea level rise in the city of Savannah, Georgia, which is in the south-east area of the United States.  The story describes how the sea level has risen approximately 30 centimeters in the last 100 years, and it is expected to rise another 30 centimeters by the year 2050.  The television news story also reports on the combined impact of sea level rise and Tropical Story Debbie which occurred in August of 2024.
