CCCL Film Festival 2025 Announces Short Films in Special Presentation Program

January 28, 2025 - Bangkok - CCCL announces short films in the Special Presentation program for the 2025 edition of its festival.


The short films featured in this year's special presentation program highlight outstanding works addressing the climate crisis, selected from around the world. These short films aim to broaden awareness of the impacts of climate change in a global scale. Highlights include WHO LOVES THE SUN, a documentary from Canada by Arshia Shakiba, which recently won the Best Short Film Award in the Orizzonti competition at the 81st Venice Film Festival, and WILD SUMMON by Karni Arieli and Saul Freed, a haunting animation exploring the life cycle of salmon in the age of the climate crisis.


The festival will take place exclusively in person from August 15-16, 2025 at the Alliance Française Bangkok. The nationwide satellite screenings will run from February 17-23, 2025. Free tickets will be available on February 3, 2025 at en.ccclfilmfestival.com

AFTER: LAND OF FAITH

DIR. Pattaraporn Sritongtae / Thailand / 20 min

The Pakakayo hill-tribe people have passed down a legend for generations about Kachueku, or the Heart of the Earth, a place said to remain untouched when the world is submerged. However, in reality, the Pakakayo people of Bang Kloi continue to face discrimination from authorities, disrupting their deeply rooted traditional way of life."


BUZZ OF THE EARTH

DIR. Greta Stocklassa / Czechia / 29 min

The European Space Agency assembles a team of scientists to craft a message for alien civilizations. Tasked with compiling a comprehensive report on humanity, the team faces unexpected challenges—debating not only what to say but also how to say it."


FRONTIER TOWN

DIR. Tom Tennant, Theo Tennant / Wales, UK / 30 min

Fairbourne’s residents were told that by 2054 their village will be decommissioned and left to the sea. As scientists test coastal defences in a lab, villagers on the frontline of the climate crisis confront an uncertain future. This is a story about the people labeled the UK’s first climate refugees.


THE LAST OBSERVERS

DIR. Maja K Mikkelsen / Sweden / 24 min

Every third hour—day and night, every day of the week—Karin Persson and Lennart Karlsson have spent 37 years observing and recording the weather in Falsterbo, Sweden, since 1987. Their daughter captures their final year before the weather station transitions to automation, like all the other stations in Sweden. This documentary is a heartfelt and multifaceted story of love and connection, honoring these last observers.


VOLCELEST

DIR. Éric Briche / France / 15 min

Winter has arrived. Struggling to survive, Fuseline, a young ermine, is driven by hunger to leave her wild habitat and seek refuge near an isolated farm with its chickens. Her presence disrupts the fragile existence of the man who lives there.


WHEN THE WIND RISES

DIR. Chen Hung / Taiwan / 18 min

A village elder’s isolated struggle against the expansion of an oil refinery throws the community into turmoil. The other villagers are torn, caught indecisively between the pursuit of short-term social security and the desire for sustainable change.


WHO LOVES THE SUN

DIR. Arshia Shakiba / Canada / 20 min

In war-torn northern Syria, Who Loves the Sun delves into the world of makeshift oil refineries and the stark realities of life within this post-apocalyptic landscape. Mahmood is a prominent figure in these operations, navigating harsh working conditions and complex local dynamics.


WILD SUMMON

DIR. Saul Freed, Karni Arieli / UK / 15 min

Wild Summon is a natural history fantasy that chronicles the dramatic life cycle of wild salmon, portrayed in human form. The film immerses viewers in the salmon’s epic journey from freshwater birth to oceanic adulthood and back to their origins.
